Some other things to think about:

HOUSE AND CONTENTS CLAIMS

Burglary/Theft – report the incident to the police and follow their instructions. Once they have finished take photos before you tidy things up and secure the house. If you need to get a builder/glazier to secure the house do so.
Other damage eg storm, flood – the first step is to secure your property and take any reasonable steps to clean up what you easily can. Take photos before you start and keep notes of what you do for the insurance company.
Fire – if your house is damaged/destroyed by fire this can be a very traumatic experience but the most important thing is to protect yourself and your family. Do not try and save any personal possessions, focus on making sure everyone is safe and accounted for. Call 111 for the fire brigade and follow their instructions and start making a list of the things that have been stolen.

MOTOR VEHICLE CLAIMS

Accident – for minor incidents take details of the third party, take photos of the damage to both vehicles including the number plate of the other vehicle and details of any witnesses who make have seen the incident. Don’t admit liability for the accident if you can avoid it.  If the vehicle can still be driven and no one is injured then you can leave the scene. If the vehicle cannot be driven then have it towed to a storage yard.

For more major accidents it is likely the police will attend and collect a lot of the information needed for the claim. If you are able to get the officer’s details and take photos.

COMMERCIAL PROPERTY CLAIMS

Minor damage – take photos, secure the property and report the incident.
Major damage – call emergency services if required or your preferred repairers for urgent work. Call Insure Taranaki to discuss the next steps.
Burglary/ Theft – report the incident to the police and follow their instructions. Once they have finished take photos before you tidy things up and secure the premises. If you need to get a builder/glazier to secure the premises do so. Start making a list of the things that have been stolen.

LIABILITY CLAIMS

Should you receive a demand, writ, summons or notice of claim immediately advise Insure Taranaki. Do not respond to anything until we have spoken and provided advice.

If an incident occurs and it is obvious you are responsible try to avoid admitting liability (it can prejudice your insurance cover) but take photos and contact us as soon as possible. Liability claims can be complex and expensive, so it is best to keep notes of conversations/meetings and gather as much information as possible for the insurance company to assist with the claim.
